Thomas Forester & Sons Ltd (England) Vase with Japonisme Decoration — crafted in England, this decorative vase bears the TF & S LP mark and Japanese-influenced imagery of the majestic Phoenix.
Victorian potteries often adapted East Asian motifs to suit Western tastes. Period finds like matches discovered inside suggest lively domestic use in the early 1900s. A characterful accent bridging East and West.
When I found this vase and got it home, during cleaning I discovered a couple of hand whittled match sticks inside. This, of course, fascinated me as to the dating of it – especially given the narrow opening which made it quite a project to get the matches out. It would appear, from this discovery, that this vase was likely near a fireplace, wood stove or wood-fired kitchen oven/stove and was likely one of Thomas Forester & Sons early pieces since in 1850 matches began being mass-produced in Europe.
