The Silvertone 699 is a classic example of mid-century instrument design — an archtop acoustic guitar made in Italy and distributed by Sears during the 1960s. Known for accessible, entry-level musical instruments, Silvertone guitars were a starting point for many musicians and have since become sought-after collectibles.
This model features a two-tone wood body, rounded sound hole, and original tuners with a charmingly retro aesthetic. While not considered high-end at the time, the 699 now holds nostalgic value for its period character and distinctive voice — appealing to both collectors and players of vintage acoustics. The 699 features a unique arched, laminated maple back. This construction adds to its tone and projection, resulting in full body, rich sound.
Its Italian manufacture adds a layer of international interest to its American retail history.
- More substantial than American Silvertones: The Italian-made EKO Silvertones are considered a step up in quality and construction from their American-made counterparts, which were often viewed as more toy-like.
We have done some restoration work to this piece. Here is what was done:
- Strings updated to Bronze
- Lowered Saddle (Action still a little higher but definitely plays well)
- Replaced original Nut with Bone
- Lubricated & Tuned
